Best hiking boots for Lake District in winter?
I'm planning a winter hike in the Lake District and need recommendations for reliable, waterproof hiking boots that can handle muddy and potentially snowy conditions. My budget is around £150. I've been looking at Scarpa, Salomon, and Merrell options, but there are so many models and I'm not sure which would be best for the specific conditions in the Lake District during winter months. I've had issues with cold feet in the past, so good insulation is important. I'd particularly appreciate advice from people who regularly hike in the Lake District during winter. What boots have worked well for you? Any specific models to recommend or avoid? And are there any local shops in the area where I could try boots on before purchasing? Thanks in advance for your help!

I've been hiking in the Lake District for over 10 years, including winter months, and I swear by my Scarpa SL Active boots. They're at the top of your budget but worth every penny. Completely waterproof, great ankle support, and they last for years if you take care of them. The Vibram sole gives excellent grip on muddy and wet terrain, which you'll definitely encounter in the Lakes during winter!
I'd recommend the Salomon Quest 4 GTX. They're excellent for winter in the Lakes. The Gore-Tex lining keeps your feet completely dry even in heavy rain and snow, and they have great insulation. I've used mine for three winters now and they're still going strong. There's a good outdoor shop in Ambleside called 'The Climbers Shop' where you can try them on before buying.
If you're concerned about cold feet, I'd suggest looking at the Meindl Bhutan MFS. They have excellent insulation and the memory foam system molds to your feet for extra comfort on long hikes. I use them with merino wool socks in winter and my feet stay toasty even in snow. For the Lake District's terrain, they're perfect - waterproof, great grip, and very durable.
Don't forget to consider the socks you'll wear with your boots! Even the best boots won't keep your feet warm if you're wearing cotton socks. I'd recommend investing in good quality merino wool hiking socks to pair with whatever boots you choose. Smartwool and Darn Tough make excellent options that provide warmth even when wet. For the Lake District in winter, I usually wear a thin liner sock with a thicker merino sock over it for maximum warmth and blister prevention.
I've been using Hanwag Tatra II GTX boots for Lake District winter hiking for the past two seasons and they've been fantastic. Super comfortable right out of the box with minimal breaking in needed. The grip is excellent on wet rock and muddy paths, and they've kept my feet dry through stream crossings and heavy rain. They're also sturdy enough to take crampons if you're heading up to the higher fells where you might encounter ice in the depths of winter.
Quick tip: whatever boots you choose, treat them with a good waterproofing wax before your trip and regularly thereafter. Makes a huge difference in the Lake District where you're almost guaranteed to encounter wet conditions!
